Google's AI Overview
at the Top of Search. AI Overviews now appear above organic results on the majority of Google searches. Brands featured in the AI Overview capture the highest-visibility position on the page - built on the same core SEO signals that have always driven Google rankings.
Is Powered by the Same
Systems as Organic Search. AI Overviews are Google's AI-generated summaries that appear above traditional organic results for hundreds of millions of daily searches. Critically, Google's own guidance confirms these features are powered by their core Search ranking and quality systems - not a separate algorithm, not a separate optimisation discipline. This means the path to AI Overview feature placement is the same path as top organic rankings: exceptional content quality, strong E-E-A-T, technical crawlability and clear page structure. What differentiates AI Overview optimisation is understanding exactly which content formats, query types and structural patterns Google's AI system draws from when building its summarised answers - and aligning your content specifically to those patterns.
the Majority of Google Searches. AI Overviews now occupy the most prominent position on Google Search results pages. Brands not optimised for AI Overview feature placement are invisible above the fold on the searches that matter most.

Built on What
Google Confirmed. Most agencies treat AI Overview as a mystery. We treat it as a documented, Google-confirmed process - and build every element of our programme from the source that controls the outcome.
1Is AI Overview optimisation different from regular SEO?
Google has confirmed directly in their AI Optimisation Guide (June 2025) that AI Overviews are powered by their core Search ranking systems. The statement from their documentation is unambiguous: "Optimizing for generative AI search in Google is optimizing for Search." There is no separate AI Overview algorithm to game.
What differs is how we apply SEO principles specifically for AI Overview placement. This means identifying the query types most likely to trigger AI Overviews in your category, ensuring your content is technically eligible (indexed, snippet-eligible, crawlable), structuring pages for AI extraction, and building the E-E-A-T depth Google's quality systems require to select a source for the AI Overview position. The tools are core SEO. The application is targeted to AI Overview behaviour.
2What makes a page eligible to appear in AI Overviews?
Google specifies two categories of requirements. First, technical eligibility: the page must be indexed by Google (no noindex tags), eligible for snippet extraction (no max-snippet meta restrictions), crawlable by Googlebot and accessible without login barriers. A single blocking meta tag can exclude an otherwise excellent page from AI Overview consideration entirely.
Second, content quality: the page must meet Google's helpful, reliable, people-first content standard. This means content that genuinely satisfies visitor intent, demonstrates expertise and experience, provides unique insight beyond what is already widely available, and is structured clearly enough for Google's AI to extract precise, relevant passages. Both categories must be satisfied. Technical eligibility is the prerequisite. Content quality is what determines whether you are selected.
3Will being featured in AI Overview reduce my organic click rate?
The picture is more nuanced than a simple yes or no. AI Overviews do reduce clicks for non-featured organic positions - data shows brands outside the AI Overview source list can see 25-35% fewer clicks on queries where AI Overviews appear. But being featured as a source in the AI Overview changes this dynamic significantly.
Brands featured in the AI Overview maintain strong click rates because users who want depth beyond the AI summary click through to the source they already trust. More importantly, AI Overview source clicks are high-intent - the user has already read the synthesised answer and specifically wants more from you. The practical outcome: optimise to be inside the AI Overview rather than displaced by it. Brands that do not optimise end up with fewer clicks and less qualified traffic. Brands that earn AI Overview source placement maintain visibility and attract higher-converting visitors.
4What content types does Google's AI Overview prefer to cite?
Based on Google's confirmed guidance and observed AI Overview patterns, certain content types consistently attract citation: comprehensive how-to guides that walk through a process step by step; comparison and best-of content covering multiple options with specific evaluation criteria; definition and explainer pages that clearly answer "what is X" questions; FAQ-structured content that directly addresses specific questions; and expert analysis with documented first-hand experience or original data.
The common thread across all of these is directness: AI Overviews are built to give users a fast, comprehensive answer. Content that gets to the answer immediately, organises supporting detail clearly and demonstrates genuine expertise is structurally aligned with what Google's AI extracts. Generic content that buries the answer, hedges every claim or recycles commonly available information is less likely to be selected - because Google's AI can synthesise that type of content itself and does not need to cite a source for it.
5How do you measure AI Overview performance?
We track two primary metrics. First, AI Overview feature rate: the percentage of your target queries for which your brand appears as a cited source in the AI Overview, tested monthly across a defined query set. This is the direct measure of whether the optimisation is working. Second, Google Search Console AI Overview data: impressions and clicks attributed to AI Overview appearances, which Google now reports separately from standard organic in Search Console.
Monthly reports include feature rate trending over time, which specific pages are being cited and for which queries, competitor feature rates on the same query set, the content Google is extracting from your pages when you are featured, and specific content recommendations for queries where competitors are featured and you are not. Results are typically first visible within 60 days of completing technical eligibility fixes and content restructuring on the highest-priority pages.
6Does AI Overview apply to my industry?
AI Overviews appear on the vast majority of informational, research, comparison and how-to queries - which means virtually every B2B and B2C industry is affected. If your customers research before buying, compare options, ask "what is the best X" or search for how to solve a problem your product or service addresses, AI Overviews are already appearing for those queries.
Google does apply more conservative AI Overview triggering on certain sensitive verticals - medical, legal and financial advice queries are sometimes handled differently due to content quality requirements in those areas. For the vast majority of commercial industries - SaaS, professional services, e-commerce, agencies, technology, manufacturing and beyond - AI Overviews are already the dominant above-the-fold feature on the highest-value research queries. We begin every engagement with a trigger audit specific to your category so you can see exactly how prevalent AI Overviews are for your target queries before committing to the programme.
